Letter to the Editor:
NO UGLY ROYALTY AT MALVERN HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE IT MIGHT “OFFEND” SOMEONE. The MHS school board and MHS faculty have lost my respect over this issue and I am now offended.
But, wait, I’m not allowed to be offended it seems. Give me a break. This nation’s “sensitivity meter” needs adjusting and I suppose, in all honesty, mine does as well. I know I am probably “over sensitive” on the issues of patriotism, disrespectful protest of our national symbols and treatment of veterans.
But in my defense, I cannot see how any one who serves a career or any term of service in the military, or is the spouse, child, or descendant of a veteran could not become a little (or a lot) emotionally charged on these issues. Taking down “offensive” statues, kneeling for the anthem, denying young adults and children a traditional way of enjoying school, and the list goes on and on. Someone is always going to be offended (me, you, someone). That is the nature of the human experience. I think we are a progressive nation who has lost our way.
Thomas Rutherford, Malvern

Shuffield Caught

The assistant manager of Family Dollar Store in Gurdon is alleged to have taken a large amount of cash from the store safe on Dec. 5, according to a Gurdon Police spokesman.
Tyler Shuffield, 26, is said to have used his entry key to open the store when it was closed and removed the cash. He went missing until being discovered by police on Dec. 19.
Gurdon Police Officer Garry Marshall said the Family Dollar Store surveillance camera did not show anyone else present but Shuffield when the money was being removed from the safe.
Gurdon Sgt.Toby Garner said further investigation has not disclosed any evidence of an abduction and it is currently the opinion of the officers on the case that Shuffield acted alone in removing the money.
According to Sgt. Garner, Tyler Bradley Shuffield was arrested on Dec. 19 in San Angelo, Texas. Shuffield was checking into a hotel there when the hotel clerk recognized him from a Facebook post and contacted law enforcement.
San Angelo Police Department officers took Shuffield into custody for extradition back to Clark County, Arkansas. Shuffield was alone at the time of the arrest.
The former store manager is being held on the following felony charges: one count of commercial burglary, two counts of breaking and entering and one count of theft of property.
Sgt.Garner said, “We at the Gurdon Police Department would like to thank Clark County Sheriff Jason Watson, and his investigators (Lt. Brian Daniels and Investigator Russell Ursery) for assisting with this case.”
GPD Officer Marshall said Thursday he has had no report of court dates thus far for Shuffield.

If awarded, the city will create a 100% percent funded FUNPARK which will enhance the experience for those who reserve city hall for parties, develop a play space within walking distance for small and older children and designate the City Marshal’s Office as a Safe Zone for kids. This grant is very competitive and we are in competition with many other deserving communities. I will keep you in the loop.
Another milestone on Friday was the beginning of the concrete pour for the new Exxon Tigermart at the junction of Highway 53 and 67. This Exxon Tigermart will feature a convenience store, Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream and a fast food outlet.

Christmas parade Dec. 6

By JOHN NELSON
Tailgate News Editor
Chamber of Commerce member Vickie Smithpeters told fellow Rotarians Thursday a tentative Christmas Parade date for Gurdon has been set for Tuesday evening, Dec. 6.
“If it rains, we plan on using Thursday, Dec. 8,” she said. “By setting it early like this it will give time for our high school band to get it on the schedule and for the people in the community to be thinking about getting those floats ready.”
Rotarian member Allen Blackwell, who is Gurdon Schools superintendent and GHS principal, said he will pass the information on to Devin West, high school band director.
“The band has grown in number and should have an impressive showing at the parade,” Blackwell said.
In other business, Rotarians mourned the death of their president, retired GHS Principal Leonard Gills, siting how “Mr. Gills worked hard to keep the Rotary club on a positive course.”
Rotary treasurer Anita Cabe said she is talking to other members to find one to finish out the now open presidential term and then the group will elect a new president at the end of the year.
“I am optimistic about our club’s future and we need to continue working hard for the community in honor of all of the hard work Leonard put into Rotary,” she said. “Our area is looking forward to several hundred new jobs brought to us through the lumber business expansions and constructions so this club has a lot of potential for new members. As we grow, we will be able to be a bigger help to our community with scholarships. Close-Up trips and more.”
The Gurdon Rotary Club has regular meetings at the Central Arkansas and Development Council (CADC) Senior Citizen Center on Main Street every Thursday at noon. If you are interested in joining, come to one of the meetings or contact Anita Cabe at: (870) 353-4444.

GURDON LIGHT HISTORY – Over the years, may stories of what the lighted circle that has moved up and down inbetween Sticky Road and Highway 53 really is have been offered. Mayor Sherry Kelley did some historical research and came up with this as far as an explanation to fit the folk tale about the headless ghost taking a lantern on pitch black nights in search of his head. The folk story says a railroad man lost his head to robbers and has never been at peace. Therefore, he keeps searching for the missing head. Mayor Kelley said even though the railroad tracks are gone, the light continues to appear. The above historical account is on display at the old radio station building downtown.

Horace, who lived in Egypt more than 1,000 years before Christ, has been written about by a secular scholar in the 19th Century as supposedly having 12 disciples and a mother named Mary, plus undergoing a cruxifiction, like the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazarath. According to latest AFR research, Horace was nothing more than an Egyptian mythological character who searched the world for his dead father.
The radio station owner added his opinion by saying even top athiests admitted the 19th century writing about Horace being the first “Jesus” was fiction. The station owner went on to say, “Jesus Christ has changed millions of lives for the better. Who has this Horace ever helped?”

THE LAST CAB RIDE

Submitted by
Al Lyons, Fairfield, Georgia
I arrived at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I honked again. Since this was going to be my last ride of my shift I thought about just driving away, but instead I put the car in park and walked up to the door and knocked..
“Just a minute”, answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor.. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90’s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940’s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no nickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware. “Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness.
“It’s nothing”, I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.” “Oh, you’re such a good boy,” she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?” “It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.. “Oh, I don’t mind,” she said. “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice.” I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening.
“I don’t have any family left,” she continued in a soft voice.. “The doctor says I don’t have very long.” I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. “What route would you like me to take?” I asked. For the next two hours, we drove through the city.
She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a b allroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she’d ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing. As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.” We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico. Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her. I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair. “How much do I owe you?” she asked, reaching into her purse. “Nothing,” I answered. “You have to make a living,” she said. “There are other passengers,” I responded. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.
“You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,” she said. “Thank you.”
I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.. I didn’t pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away? On a quick review, I don’t think that I have done anything more important in my life. We’re conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware – beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.
PEOPLE MAY NOT REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID, OR WHAT YOU SAID. BUT THEY WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance. May your days on earth be many, may your life be free from strife, and may God walk beside you, everyday of your life..

Growing Up
in rural America
There are still many of us
that grew up in a free world.
Nobody told us to wear a helmet when riding a bike. Nobody warned us not to drink from a water hose or to put sun block on a nose.

Back then, on the American farm, we worked hard for the crops and tended the animals.

We heard wisdom from our folks, not some politician know it all. And we loved the freedom to make up our own mind – in my rural America.

We made friends at school and had them over to spend the night if we wanted to get to know them.

You met the girl you would date in church, at a bar, at the bowling alley or in the diner. You smiled, she smiled and you watched her eyes. No internet connection provided high tech lies.

Times have changed. Old laws protected our freedom to speak New ones are designed to make us meek. I grew up speaking my mind. The followers back then were seen as blind. I wonder on this Independence Day, what else some “leader” will try to steal away?

Gurdon to get
Peewee field
Grant money received through Representative Richard Womack for general improvements in Gurdon earlier this year will be sufficient for the pee wee football and soccer field to be built.
Justice of the Peace Sherry Kelley said $10,000 of the original $25,000 grant will be used on the field and also for a parking area.
She estimates its completion this year and peewee football and soccer being played there by 2015.
The field will be next to the Gurdon park and pond, with a line of vision looking at the pond being cleared as well.
“As to the concern for parking, it will have its own parking area and only be utilized when games are going on,” Kelley said.
“It should not disrupt regular parking used for fishing or to enjoy the park facility.”

Farm Pond…
I was in the third grade with Ronnie Divinie
and he was a good friend.

He had about 10 brothers and sisters, so for his bunch the fun seemed to never end.

We were still in school one hot day when Ronnie did
not come out to play. I knew something was wrong because it was August. The school was cold and most of our homes were hot.

In fact, it had been so hot the day before that Ronnie and his brothers stayed home from school, making a farm pond into a pool. They let her rip, not using responsibility as a rule.

All of those kids in that farm pond caused a bunch of fun, but everyone thought it was so neat to avoid school and all that heat.

Ten kids went into the pond that day and only 9 came out… We had a silent prayer for Ronnie’s young soul the next day, as my friend Ronnie would never again enjoy play.
So if you are in a
swimming mood,
remember Ronnie,
and go by the rules.

We must use wisdom
and pass it on early.
The more kids the
merrier, but shout about until you have an
accurate head count.

Ronnie drowned, the
family suffered. His
classmates suffered. Don’t go off by yourself near water. Because you see, no matter how tragic the obit, it falls to me…

Bigfoot a reality?

By JOHN NELSON
Tailgate News Editor
A suspected “Bigfoot” cow killing, in rural Clark County has prompted an interest in what some have called Sasquatch, a Native American term for the perhaps mythological creature known as “Bigfoot” because so many of the reports describe this Neanderthal-type quasa human as having feet large enough to go with a 9 to 12 foot body.
Local folklore in Southern Arkansas has placed a “Bigfoot” monster in Fouke, although many have considered Halloween hunts for such a creature to be as unbelievable to common thought as vampires or werewolves.
Kay, a local store attendant who has lived in the Gurdon area most of her life, said Tuesday after being told about Tal H. Branco’s research on Bigfoot, “I hope you get to go looking for him because it can be exciting.
“We have gone as a family to Fouke on a trip to look for the monster many times.”
Kay gave no indication she ever found said “monster,” but on the other hand never said she did not find a Bigfoot creature at Fouke.
Rotarian Leonard Gills, a retired principal for Gurdon High School, had another appointment and did not get to hear Branco’s evidence on the Bigfoots, but said of the Fouke monster, “Our school plays Fouke in sports and we were all naturally curious about the alleged sitings, but I have never seen the monster.”
ROTARY LECTURE
Tal H. Branco, also known as Bill, came to the Gurdon Rotary on Tuesday, June 18 to present excerpts from a lifetime of gathering evidence to support the theory that Bigfoot is real and actually not just one ‘monster’ but a race of creatures known to many Native Americans as “the other brothers.”
Branco, who spent years working under another name as a law enforcement officer, is the director of field research and investigation of the Bigfoot Researches Organization (BFRO). He is a Saline County resident, but does a lot of traveling in his research.
Branco told Rotarians he has investigated hundreds of Bigfoot sitings over 35 years in 15 states, including Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alabama and West Virginia..
Branco began by saying when he first started getting curious about Bigfoot he asked a Native American friend to describe to him what the whole thing was about.
“I did research on what many Native Americans concurred to me and that was simply that Bigfoot was real,” he said. “Native Americans call us New bees who are curious and just learning about this situation.”
According to Branco, the Native Americans coined the term “Sasquatch” to describe these creatures, who normally live deep in the woods away from people. They are close to human in species, but not human.
Branco reports extensively in at least five Internet sites on his many sitings of Bigfoot. At least four sitings have been in Saline County, say 35 to 45 miles from his home.
For details, go to: http://woodape.org/reports/report/county?county=Saline&state=AR. This, he said, gives details of his research in the Ouachita National Forest and is the area where “I saw three different Bigfoot at different times.”
The easiest way to find country-wide encounters for the novice at Bigfoot hunting may be to go to : www.bigfootencounters.com/
For more extensive proof and research on this subject, contact Branco on his cell phone: (501) 352-1159.
In Rotary at Gurdon, the Bigfoot researcher was asked why no bodies of dead Bigfoot have ever been documented? He said the creatures are very careful in the way they bury their dead and have been known to pull up trees from the roots, plant the dead relative and replace the tree so the entire incident remains undetected to humans.
As to where a Bigfoot has ever been killed, Branco said he has been given reports that two or three of them have been, but apparently their bodies disappeared as well.
Branco said Bigfoot sitings have enjoyed a long history in the United States. Scandinavian Explorer Leaf Erickson reported sitings before the time of Christopher Columbus.
President Teddy Roosevelt made mention that he had encountered people who had seen a Bigfoot.
In Arkansas, two of the oldest Bigfoot sitings were in Greene County, Poinsett County and St. Francis County. They occurred in 1851 and were written about in the Memphis newspapers at the time.
Branco said people had seen a Sasquatch “charging at cattle.”
“They are fast as lightening and can outrun anything in the woods” he asserted. “In Saline County, they live way back in the woods and then run into the swamp.”
DANGEROUS
Branco said Bigfoot can be dangerous if they believe their territory is threatened or under attack.
When calling the Bigfoot on his many explorations to the deep woods around this country, Branco said he simply yells something like “Hey, hey, hey,” and if one is nearby he is may give a response sounding almost like a grumble to let the human know that this is his territory and he would appreciate being left alone in it.
Banco said in one siting report he researched a Bigfoot broke out of some ice and jumped up on a horse with a man riding by.
The Bigfoot came out of the water by breaking the ice, put his arm around the neck of the rider and pulled out an eye before tearing his skull.
The story, Branco said, was that the incident happened in a rural river county.
“There are at least 10,000 credible siting reports of Bigfoot encounters nationwide,” Branco said.
Research continues, especially in places like California where funding exists for such discoveries.
“I first got interested in Bigfoot about 50 years ago after hunting in the Ouachita National Forest,” Branco said.
“I have hunted for food since the age of 9, and spent much of my hunting time alone.”
Branco said he learned the art of effective tracking in the woods from his grandfather Tal. Early on, he started noticing things like trees with twisted off tops and buds eaten off of them.
Branco started tracking to find out if it might have been a wildcat or the like. Instead, he discovered a footprint in the woods that was 18 inches long and nearly 8 inches wide! And it looked as if it belonged to a human!
“I noticed it was flat-footed, with no in-step,” he said. “Then about 35 years ago a group of us were gathered at Lake Ouachita and it was very cold.
“We heard something start yelling! It started out a bellow and turned into a scream. I grew up in the woods, a woods rat so to speak, but I had never heard anything like that before.”
Branco said he believed what he heard was not human, but just plain weird. Later that evening, when the rest of his camper friends were asleep, Branco said he heard something walking back from the creek with slow, long steps.
There were guys sleeping in pick-ups with guns, who never heard a thing…
“Then I heard Coyote whimpering. They had followed Sasquatch to our camp and were expressing their dislike for being so close to humans,” he said.
In his travels, Branco said he has seen evidence of three types of Sasquatch; red haired that are 9 feet tall or more, black kinky haired that are shorter and stockier and a third type that looks Asian with silky black hair and a slightly smaller body.
“One thing future woods rats should remember, you don’t hunt Bigfoot, they hunt you,” he said.
“I have put out food for them many times. They are partial to sweets and fried baloney with salt on it. Normally, the kill hogs, deer and racoon for a steady diet.”
Branco said the last time he saw a Bigfoot was in 2010. He was in a hollering contest with one in a swampy woods with running water. The Bigfoot came out of the water after fussing about the calling Branco did and quickly ran away. A few minutes later, he heard a stick break and felt something watching him. He was just 200 yards from his truck.
“He was a teenager Bigfoot, slim and athletically built. Once he realized I was looking, he ran into a thicket.”
Branco said he has asked Native Americans to have access to Bigfoot grave sites that they have described, but they will not let you dig up the dead Sasquatch.
An Osage/Shawnee full-blooded native American from Greene County said over the weekend to this reporter, “Sasquatch are part spirit. Yes, they can die and others come on, but it is a spiritual creature and so therefore you will not find a skeleton.”
Good, bad or indifferent, Branco’s research intrigued this reporter. One other good source he gave the Tailgate News is: www.alabamabigfoot.com/bigfoot/REPORTS/html.
This describes more than 50 reports of Bigfoot investigations that Branco conducted in that state.
This reporter intends on going through Alabama on vacation this year. Many years of loving walks in the woods are in this farm boy’s history so more than like Sasquatch will simply have to scoot over.
Branco said a local investigation of Bigfoot is planned for the Bertsell area, but the date of investigation is not for publication.
“I want what we find, or whatever finds us, to be the real deal. If we broadcast a date, some prankster might pull something, and invalidate the research.” he warned.

Airport… July 4

We always started
by looking off the porch.
Her curley hair went
to the middle of her back, as I felt it on my arm drapped around Joni, my high school sweetheart.

We would see the fireworks of different towns that decided to lock and load the night before. Tomorrow, we would say, would be airport day.
In Hagerstown, on July 4, back in the 1970’s, everybody went to the airport with a blanket to sit on, a girl to drape your arm around (if you had one) and plenty of RC Cola or Dr. Pepper. You needed a drink for when the 100 degree July sunshine started baring down.

My girl Joni was as cute as any pony and so there I would sit all proud. Proud to be free, proud to me and proud to be seen with Joni in that crowd.

I’d hang with her, my
best friend Dean and
maybe Shorts (John) would
make that scene.

Both of these guys
are high school
friends. To me, I’ll
love them until the end.

And so the day of freedom, year afer year, would come and go each July 4. The freedom to be with good friends, dream big dreams, oh who in the world could want more?

The fireworks, the memories, the small plane shows too. Just a small town in America respecting country. For me, that will do.
